The purpose of an au pair placement

An au pair placement is a cultural exchange arrangement built around shared family life. The au pair is not a full-time domestic worker, nanny, cleaner or emergency substitute parent. The purpose is to support the host family with agreed light childcare and household tasks while the au pair receives accommodation, meals, agreed pocket money, time for language learning and an opportunity to experience Finnish life. A successful placement starts with realistic expectations. The host family must explain the daily routine, duties, working times, house rules and support available. The au pair must ask questions, communicate honestly and respect agreed responsibilities. Both sides need to understand that the arrangement is based on trust, cultural learning and clear limits.
